Ideal Shopping Cart Button Text

There are a lot of different ways to name your shopping cart button. Some people think that making their button look different and named different will help draw more attention to it and therefor more items will be added to their users shopping carts.

The reality is, going against the norm is going to hurt you more than help. The text you choose for your add to cart button should read either "Add to Shopping Cart" or "Add to Cart." If you can fit the full "Add to Shopping Cart" text into your site design and button, then do it. Otherwise, go with "Add to Cart."

Don't call your cart a "Bag" like VictoriasSecret.com does (as shown above with the pink button). Don't call it a basket, purse, container, tote, or anything other than the standard "Cart." Don't style your fonts in some abstract style. Keep your button text legible and in a standard font such as Verdana, Arial, or Times New Roman.

If you want your add to cart button to grab a user's attention, style it with colors instead of changing the font style or text of the button. Use something that matches your site's design, but will stand out when you squint your eyes viewing the page. You want the button to be easily visible when you squint your eyes, but not stand out too much to where it clearly doesn't match any part of your design.

As with all things that deal with usability, test multiple different add to cart buttons on your site and see what converts the best. A small change such as the color of the add to cart button, or the wording of the button can have a significant impact on your conversion rates.
